Antony Laffor played his second match for Mamelodi Sundowns against Jomo Cosmos but took to the field wearing a different jersey number to the one he wore when he made his debut against Amazulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Liberian lanky utility player had initially selected to play using the jersey number 24 which was previously worn by Franklin Cale, who joined Supersport United at the beginning of February 2012.
The jersey number 24 was used against Amazulu, but Supporters might have asked themselves questions when Laffor came on as a second half substitute against Cosmos wearing jersey 28.
Head of Technical Mr. Trott Moloto clarifies the issue of the sudden jersey number change in an interview with Sundownsfc.com.
“We were informed by the PSL that the Jersey number 24 which was a registered number used by Franklin Cale when he was still with us cannot be utilized by any player until the end of the 2011/12 season, therefore we were instructed to make use of a different jersey number, hence number 28” explained Mr. Moloto.
The same should apply for Laffor’s previous jersey number at the Tshwane rivals, since it is being used by someone else and Moloto noted it by saying:
“The question remains about the jersey number ten at Supersport, which was previously used by Antony Laffor but is still being used by Sameehg Doutie” he concluded.
The PSL’s Kit Manual states:
6.6 Clubs should register jersey numbers to be used by their players during the season (league and cup competitions)
6.7 Such registered numbers should not be allocated to any other player before the end of that particular season.
When asked about the sudden jersey number change Laffor had this to say: “I don’t have a problem with the jersey number change because all I want to do is play football and play well. At the end of the season I will not be changing the jersey number anymore because I actually like number 28” the player concluded.
